About Rolex

Rolex was founded in London in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf and moved to Geneva in 1919. Since then it has built its reputation on a few core ideas: the waterproof Oyster case of 1926, the self-winding Perpetual rotor of 1931 and a habit of improving its models slowly instead of replacing them. That is why a Datejust from twenty years ago and one made this year are recognizably the same watch, and why Rolex reference numbers are so easy to research.

The Datejust, introduced in 1945, is the most popular place to start. It comes in 28, 31, 36 and 41 mm sizes, with smooth, fluted or diamond bezels, on the five link Jubilee or the three link Oyster bracelet. The Day-Date, launched in 1956 and often called the President, is made only in gold or platinum and shows the day of the week spelled out in full. For sport models, the Submariner (1953) is the reference dive watch, the GMT-Master II tracks a second time zone, and the Cosmograph Daytona (1963) is the Rolex chronograph with its tachymeter bezel. The Sky-Dweller adds an annual calendar and a second time zone, and the Yacht-Master brings a nautical look to the Oyster case.

Reading a Rolex reference helps you shop. In most modern six digit references the last digit tells you the material: 0 is Oystersteel, 1 is steel and Everose gold, 3 is steel and yellow gold, 4 is steel and white gold, 5 is Everose gold, 6 is platinum, 8 is yellow gold and 9 is white gold. Letters after the number usually describe the bezel or the dial, such as LN for a black ceramic bezel or RBR for a diamond set bezel.

Our Rolex listings include both new, unworn pieces and pre-owned watches, and some are customized with aftermarket diamonds or coatings. Custom pieces are clearly marked as custom in the title and the description, because aftermarket work is not done or supported by Rolex. If you are not sure which one fits you, use the filters for model, size, metal and price, or simply call or text us with what you have in mind.

The best way to choose a Rolex is to try a few on. Bracelet style, case size and dial color all look different on the wrist than they do on a screen. We are on West 47th Street in the Diamond District, between Fifth and Sixth Avenue. Viewings are by appointment, so call or text to set a time and tell us which references you want to see.
