The Art of Fusion, 2005
Hublot was founded in 1980 by Carlo Crocco, who paired a gold watch with a natural rubber strap. The Big Bang arrived in 2005 under Jean-Claude Biver and gave the brand its modern identity. Biver called the idea the Art of Fusion: a layered case that mixes materials such as ceramic, titanium, rubber and gold. The 44mm chronograph with its porthole bezel and six H-shaped screws became one of the most recognized watches of its decade.
Big Bang Unico and the Spirit of Big Bang
In 2013 Hublot introduced the Big Bang Unico with its in-house HUB1242 flyback chronograph, which shows its column wheel through the dial. Unico cases come in 42mm, 44mm and 45mm, in titanium, black ceramic, King Gold, Magic Gold and full sapphire. As a rule of thumb, references starting 411 are 45mm Unicos and 441 are 42mm Unicos, while earlier Big Bang chronographs often start with 301. The Spirit of Big Bang, launched in 2014, moves the chronograph into a tonneau case in 42mm and 45mm and uses the HUB4700, a calibre built on the Zenith El Primero.
King Gold is Hublot's red gold alloy with added platinum for a deeper tone. Magic Gold is a scratch resistant 18k gold made by fusing gold into ceramic.
What to look for
Check the six H-shaped bezel screws: they should sit aligned and unmarked, since a slipped tool leaves scratches that are hard to hide. Ceramic cases resist scratches but can chip at the edges. Inspect the rubber strap for cracks near the lugs, and if the watch uses the One Click system, test that the strap releases and locks firmly. Run the chronograph through start, stop and reset. Diamond bezels and pave dials are common on the Big Bang; Hublot sets some at the factory, and aftermarket pieces on our site are marked as custom. Match the serial number on the caseback to the papers.

Hublot Big Bang questions
What is the difference between the Big Bang and the Big Bang Unico?
Unico refers to the movement. Original Big Bangs use chronograph calibres built from outside base movements, while the Unico, from 2013, uses Hublot's own HUB1242 flyback chronograph with a column wheel visible on the dial. Unico dials are usually skeletonized to show it off. The Unico also has a power reserve of about 72 hours, longer than most earlier Big Bang calibres.
Is the Spirit of Big Bang a Big Bang?
Yes, it belongs to the Big Bang family but uses a tonneau, or barrel shaped, case instead of the round porthole. It keeps the layered construction and the H-shaped screws. The chronograph runs on the HUB4700, based on the Zenith El Primero, which beats at 36,000 vibrations per hour. It wears very differently from a round Big Bang, so it is worth trying both.
Which Big Bang size fits best?
The 42mm cases suit most wrists and are the easiest to wear daily. The 44mm and 45mm models are the classic Big Bang sizes and wear large because the layered case is thick. Smaller wrists can look at the 38mm Big Bang models. Lug to lug length matters more than diameter on this watch, so try it on before choosing a size.
Ceramic, titanium or gold: which material should I choose?
Titanium is the lightest and the most practical for daily wear. Black ceramic is hard to scratch and keeps its finish, but it can chip if knocked hard on a corner. King Gold is warm and heavy and shows wear more easily. Magic Gold gives a gold color with much better scratch resistance. Sapphire cases are transparent and dramatic, and they carry a much higher price.
