The watch that started the luxury sports category
Audemars Piguet launched the Royal Oak in 1972, designed by Gerald Genta. It was a steel watch priced like gold, with an octagonal bezel held by eight hexagonal screws, a bracelet integrated into the case and a Petite Tapisserie dial. The first ref. 5402ST measured 39mm and was so large for its time that collectors called it the Jumbo. Its thin calibre 2121 kept the case slim. The design shaped the luxury sports watches that followed.
Sizes and dials
The Royal Oak comes in 34mm, 37mm, 39mm and 41mm. The 39mm Jumbo is closest to the original, with a slim profile and no seconds hand. The 41mm Selfwinding is the core model, with a center seconds hand and date. Most modern models use the Grande Tapisserie dial pattern, while the Jumbo keeps the Petite Tapisserie. Cases come in steel, pink, yellow and white gold, titanium and platinum, with blue, black, grey and silver dials.
References to know
The 15202ST was the Jumbo from 2000 to 2021, with the calibre 2121. The 16202ST replaced it in 2022 with the calibre 7121. In 41mm, the 15400ST ran from 2012 to 2019, followed by the 15500ST with the calibre 4302 and then the 15510ST from 2022. The 15300ST was the earlier 39mm Selfwinding with the calibre 3120. For the chronograph, the 41mm 26331ST was succeeded in 2022 by the 26240ST with the integrated calibre 4401. The 15450ST is the 37mm Selfwinding.
What to look for when buying
The Royal Oak's finishing is part of its value: brushed surfaces with sharp polished bevels on the case, bezel and bracelet. Aggressive polishing softens those edges and is hard to undo, so look closely at the bevels. Check the bracelet for stretch, since the integrated links wear. Confirm the dial matches the reference and papers, and that the bezel screws are aligned and undamaged. Aftermarket diamond bezels and dials exist, and custom pieces here are marked as custom. Ask about service history and box and papers.
Prices are listed on every watch. Call or text to see Royal Oak models in person by appointment in the Diamond District in Midtown Manhattan.
Questions
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak questions
Jumbo or 41mm Royal Oak?
The 39mm Jumbo is thinner, has no seconds hand and stays closest to the 1972 original. It is the collector's choice and usually costs more. The 41mm Selfwinding has a center seconds hand, a slightly thicker case and the bolder Grande Tapisserie dial, and it suits larger wrists and daily wear. Try both on, because the integrated bracelet fits differently from a round watch.
Steel or gold Royal Oak?
Steel is the original Royal Oak and the most requested. Gold versions in pink, yellow or white are heavier and warmer, and they often come with dial colors not offered in steel. White gold looks close to steel but has more weight on the wrist. Gold Royal Oaks are often easier to find than steel ones. Choose by how often you will wear it and how much weight you like.
Is it hard to buy a steel Royal Oak at retail?
Steel Royal Oaks, especially the Jumbo and the 41mm with a blue dial, are in high demand, and boutiques typically offer them to established clients first. Waiting lists are common. The secondary market lets you choose the exact reference, dial and condition now, usually at a premium over list price, and compare several pieces before you buy.
How do I check a pre-owned Royal Oak?
Match the case number and reference on the caseback to the papers. Look at the bevels on the bezel, case and bracelet for signs of heavy polishing. Check the bracelet for stretch and the clasp for a firm close. Confirm the dial pattern and hands match the reference. Finally, ask when the watch was last serviced and whether Audemars Piguet did the work.
