About Panerai
Panerai was founded in Florence in 1860 by Giovanni Panerai as a workshop and watch shop. In the twentieth century it became a supplier of precision instruments to the Italian navy, including luminous compounds, depth gauges and, from the 1930s, the large wristwatches used by naval divers. Those military origins still define the look of every Panerai.
The Radiomir, named after the radium based luminous paste Panerai developed, has a cushion shaped case with wire lugs and a clean dial. The Luminor followed in the 1950s with a new luminous material and the crown protecting bridge that became the brand's signature. Today the Luminor and Luminor Marina are the core of the collection, with versions that add a date, a second time zone, a power reserve or a chronograph. The Submersible is the dedicated dive line, with a rotating bezel and higher water resistance.
Panerai uses a reference system that starts with PAM, such as PAM01312, which makes it easy to look up exact specifications. Many models come in 42, 44 and 47 mm sizes, so it is worth paying attention to the diameter when comparing listings.
Panerai watches are designed to be worn on straps, and changing straps is part of the fun. A single watch can look completely different on leather, rubber or fabric. Sandwich dials, with luminous material between two layers, give the numerals a three dimensional look and very strong night visibility.
If you are new to Panerai, trying on a 42 mm and a 44 mm case side by side is the quickest way to find your size. Call or text us to arrange a viewing at our office on West 47th Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenue.
