Royal Oak Offshore chronographs and divers in 37, 42, 43 and 44mm, from the 25721ST and 26470ST to the 43mm 26420 with the flyback calibre 4404, in steel, ceramic, titanium and forged carbon.

The Beast

Audemars Piguet launched the Royal Oak Offshore in 1993, designed by Emmanuel Gueit as a larger, bolder take on the Royal Oak. At 42mm with a thick case, rubber gaskets and a chronograph, it was so big for its day that it earned the nickname The Beast. The first ref. 25721ST had a Mega Tapisserie dial and a steel bracelet. It opened the door to AP's oversized, colorful and experimental sports models.

Sizes and materials

The Offshore has been made in 37mm, 42mm, 43mm and 44mm. The 42mm chronograph was the core size for years, and the 44mm models, often in ceramic or forged carbon, sit at the bold end. In 2021 AP introduced a 43mm generation with a new case and interchangeable straps. Materials include steel, titanium, black ceramic, pink gold and forged carbon, often mixed. Rubber straps in strong colors are part of the look. The Offshore Diver adds an inner rotating bezel set by a second crown.

References to know

The 25721ST is the original 42mm chronograph from 1993. The 26170ST was a long-running 42mm chronograph that followed it. The 26470ST is the 42mm chronograph many people picture today, made in a wide range of dial and strap colors. The 43mm 26420 series from 2021 uses the in-house flyback calibre 4404. Divers include the 42mm 15710ST with the calibre 3120 and its successor, the 15720ST. Ceramic and forged carbon versions were often made in limited runs.

Buying advice

Rubber parts age. Check the pusher guards, crown and bezel gaskets for cracking or discoloration, since these are replaced at service. Test the chronograph start, stop and reset, and on the 26420 the flyback as well. On forged carbon and ceramic cases, look for chips at the edges. Confirm the strap and clasp are correct for the reference. Ask about the last Audemars Piguet service and whether box and papers are present, as both affect resale strongly on limited versions.

Questions

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore questions

What is the difference between the Royal Oak and the Royal Oak Offshore?

The Royal Oak is slimmer and more refined, usually on a steel bracelet. The Offshore is larger and thicker, typically a chronograph, with rubber-clad pushers, a Mega Tapisserie dial and a sportier, louder look. Offshores come in more materials and colors. Choose the Royal Oak for a classic integrated sports watch and the Offshore for a bolder, more casual piece.

Which size Offshore should I choose?

The 42mm chronograph and the current 43mm generation suit most wrists above about seven inches. The 44mm models wear big and can be heavy in steel, while ceramic and forged carbon are lighter. The 37mm models suit smaller wrists. Trying the watch on is the best test, since the lug shape and case thickness change how an Offshore sits.

Is the 43mm 26420 better than the 26470ST?

The 26420 has the in-house flyback calibre 4404, a revised case and an interchangeable strap system. The 26470ST uses an older chronograph movement and a fixed strap or bracelet. Collectors who want the classic look at a lower price often choose the 26470ST, while those who want the newer movement go for the 26420. Condition and papers count for both.

How do I care for an Offshore rubber strap?

Rinse it with fresh water after salt water or pool use and let it dry before storing. Avoid long sun exposure, which can fade bright colors. Check for cracks near the lugs and the clasp. Replacement straps for each reference are available through Audemars Piguet service, and the 43mm generation lets you swap straps without tools.
