Two collections, one tradition
Patek Philippe divides its complicated watches into two groups. Complications covers practical everyday functions: the annual calendar, the world time, the travel time and the chronograph. Grand Complications covers the most demanding mechanisms: perpetual calendars, minute repeaters, split seconds chronographs and tourbillons. Patek introduced the annual calendar in 1996 with the reference 5035. It knows which months have 30 or 31 days and needs one adjustment a year, at the end of February.
Complications references to know
The 5205 and the 5396 are the core annual calendars, the 5396 with a classic two-window layout and moon phase. The 5146 adds a power reserve indicator. The 5230 is the world time, showing 24 cities on a rotating ring, and the 5930G combines world time with a flyback chronograph. Among chronographs, the 5170 and the 5172 use the manual wind calibre CH 29-535 PS with a column wheel. The 5905 is a self-winding flyback chronograph with an annual calendar.
Grand Complications references to know
Perpetual calendars track leap years and need no correction until 2100. The 5327 is a self-winding perpetual calendar with Breguet numerals, and the 5320G pairs a perpetual calendar with a cream dial and stepped vintage-style lugs. The 5270 is the perpetual calendar chronograph, successor to the 3970 and the 5970. The 5204 adds a split seconds function to the perpetual calendar chronograph. Minute repeaters such as the 5078 and the 5178 chime the hours, quarters and minutes on demand.
Buying a complicated Patek
Understand the mechanism before you set a calendar. Avoid date corrections in the hours around midnight while the calendar is changing, and ask to see the correctors work in person. Check that a perpetual calendar shows the correct leap year position. On chronographs, start, stop and reset several times; the hands should snap back to zero cleanly. Listen to a repeater: the strike should be clear and evenly spaced. Service on these calibres is costly and handled by Patek, so ask for the service history and match all serial numbers to the papers.
Prices are listed on every watch. Call or text for a viewing by appointment in the Diamond District in Midtown Manhattan.
Questions
Patek Philippe Complications questions
What is the difference between an annual and a perpetual calendar?
An annual calendar knows which months have 30 or 31 days, so you correct it once a year at the start of March. A perpetual calendar also knows February and leap years and needs no correction until 2100, when the calendar skips a leap year. Perpetual calendars cost more and sit in the Grand Complications collection, while annual calendars belong to Complications.
Is the world time watch practical for travel?
Yes. The 5230 shows the time in 24 zones at a glance, with a city ring and a 24-hour ring that turns once a day. A pusher on the left side of the case advances the city ring and the hour hand together, so you can change your home zone in seconds without stopping the movement. It is one of the most usable complications Patek makes.
How often does a complicated Patek need service?
It depends on use, but complicated calibres take longer and cost more to service than simple ones. A perpetual calendar or a repeater needs a highly skilled watchmaker, and Patek services them itself. When you buy, ask when the watch was last serviced and by whom. A recent Patek service with paperwork adds real value to a Grand Complication.
Should I buy a chronograph or a calendar?
It depends on how you wear a watch. A calendar works quietly in the background and is useful every day, especially the annual calendar. A chronograph is more interactive and suits people who like to time things. If you want both, the 5905 combines a flyback chronograph with an annual calendar, and the 5270 pairs a chronograph with a perpetual calendar.
