A steel sports watch from 1976

Gerald Genta drew the Nautilus, and Patek Philippe launched it in 1976 as reference 3700/1A, a 42mm steel watch priced above many gold dress pieces. Its rounded octagonal bezel and the hinges on each side of the case came from the shape of a ship's porthole. Collectors call the 3700 the Jumbo. A smaller 3800 followed in the early 1980s, and the line stayed fairly quiet until the 2006 launch of the 5711 made it the most requested steel watch Patek makes.

Sizes and the references to know

The 5711/1A is the core model: 40mm, steel, time and date, with the horizontally embossed dial. The blue dial 5711/1A-010 is the reference most shoppers ask for, and the olive green 5711/1A-014 closed out steel production in 2021. The 5712/1A adds a power reserve, moon phase and small date on an off-center layout. The 5726/1A is the annual calendar with moon phase, the 5980 is the flyback chronograph, and the 5990/1A is the Travel Time chronograph. The 7118 is the 35.2mm ladies model, and the 5811/1G is the 41mm white gold successor to the 5711.

What to look for when buying

Start with the case. The Nautilus alternates brushed and polished surfaces, and a heavy polish softens the sharp line between them. Ask whether the watch has been polished and by whom. Check the integrated bracelet for stretch at the links and test the fold-over clasp. Around 2019 Patek moved the 5711 from the calibre 324 S C to the 26-330 S C, which adds a hacking seconds function for setting the time; know which one you are buying. Match the serial numbers on the case and movement to the papers. A full set with box and certificate matters more on a Nautilus than on almost any other watch.

Aftermarket diamond bezels and dials do appear on this model. Any custom piece on our site is marked as custom, so you always know what you are comparing.

Questions

Patek Philippe Nautilus questions

What is the difference between the 5711 and the 5811?

The 5811/1G replaced the steel 5711/1A in 2022. It grows from 40mm to 41mm, comes in white gold rather than steel, and has a redesigned fold-over clasp. The dial keeps the horizontal embossing and the blue gradient. Many buyers still prefer the 5711 for its steel case and lighter feel on the wrist, while others prefer the larger gold case of the current model.

How much do box and papers matter on a Nautilus?

On a Nautilus they matter a lot. A watch with its original box, certificate and matching serial numbers is easier to resell and easier to verify. Pieces without papers usually trade at a discount, and the gap tends to be wider on steel references. For older watches you can also request an extract from the archives from Patek Philippe, which helps confirm the original configuration.

Why is the Nautilus so hard to buy at retail?

Patek Philippe makes a limited number of Nautilus watches each year, and retailers usually offer them to longtime clients with a purchase history. Waiting lists can run for years, and the steel 5711 has been discontinued. That is why most buyers turn to the secondary market, where you can choose the exact reference, dial and condition you want and see the price before you come in.

Does the Nautilus suit a smaller wrist?

Usually, yes, more than the numbers suggest. The 5711 measures 40mm across but wears closer to a 38mm round watch because the case is thin and the bracelet tapers sharply. The 7118 at 35.2mm suits smaller wrists, and the older 3800 at 37.5mm is another option. Try a few sizes in person, since the side ears make the watch look wider than it feels.
