Pocket watch precision on the wrist
In the late 1930s two Portuguese merchants asked IWC for a wristwatch as accurate as a marine chronometer. The only way to meet the request was to fit a pocket watch movement into a large wristwatch case. The result, reference 325 from 1939, had a case over 41mm wide, enormous for its time. That large, thin case with a railway minute track, Arabic numerals and leaf hands is still the basis of the Portugieser today.
Sizes and references
The Portugieser Chronograph is the best known model. The IW3714, launched in the late 1990s, is 40.9mm with a calibre based on the Valjoux 7750, reworked to place the two subdials in a vertical line. In 2020 IWC replaced it with the IW3716 at 41mm, powered by the in-house calibre 69355. The Portugieser Automatic IW5007 is 42.3mm with a seven day power reserve, a power reserve display and a small seconds subdial. The Automatic 40, reference IW3583, brought a smaller case in 2020 with the calibre 82200. The Perpetual Calendar IW5034 and the Yacht Club Chronograph extend the line.
What to check
Portugieser dials are clean, so any flaw shows. Look at the printed minute track and numerals under a loupe for smudging or touch up. On the chronograph, test start, stop and reset, and know which generation you are buying: the IW3716 has the column wheel calibre 69355 behind a sapphire caseback, while the IW3714 has a solid back. On the Automatic, confirm that the power reserve hand rises as you wind the crown. The thin bezel and polished case show scratches, so ask about polishing. Match the serial number to the papers and ask about the last service.

Questions
IWC Portugieser questions
What is the difference between the IW3714 and the IW3716?
The IW3714 used a calibre based on the Valjoux 7750, adapted to place the two subdials vertically. The IW3716, introduced in 2020, uses IWC's in-house calibre 69355 with a column wheel, a sapphire caseback and a case that grows slightly to 41mm. The dial layout is almost identical. The 3716 has the newer movement, while the 3714 often costs less on the secondary market.
Is the Portugieser too big for a small wrist?
It depends on the model. The 41mm Chronograph wears well on most wrists because the bezel is thin and the dial reads large. The 42.3mm Automatic is wider and taller, so it suits medium to large wrists. For smaller wrists, the Automatic 40 gives the same clean design in a 40mm case. The long lugs matter as much as the diameter, so try them on.
Is the Portugieser a dress watch or an everyday watch?
It sits between the two. The large dial and leather strap look right with a suit, yet the steel models are sturdy enough for daily wear. Water resistance is modest on most references, so treat it like a dress watch around water. The Yacht Club Chronograph is the sporty member of the family, with a rubber strap and higher water resistance.
Do blue dial and silver dial Portugiesers differ in value?
Dial color is one of the main factors in demand. Silver dials with blue numerals and hands are the classic look, and some combinations were made for shorter periods. Gold cased versions are much less common than steel. Value depends on the exact reference, condition and whether the watch comes with its box and papers, so compare reference numbers rather than photos.
