Named for the Italian Riviera

IWC launched the Portofino in 1984 as a large, flat moon phase watch with a pocket watch movement inside. It was named for the harbor town on the Italian coast and meant to bring the relaxed elegance of the Riviera to the wrist. Over the years the collection settled into IWC's cleanest dress watch family: round cases, slim bezels, Roman or baton markers and a simple date. Today it is often the first IWC people buy, because it wears easily and goes with almost everything.

Sizes and references

The Portofino Automatic, reference IW3565, is the core model at 40mm with the calibre 35111 and silver, black or blue dials. The 37mm and 34mm models offer smaller cases, often with diamond-set bezels, mother of pearl dials or moon phases. The Portofino Chronograph IW3910 is 42mm with a calibre based on the Valjoux 7750 and a day and date window. The Portofino Hand-Wound Eight Days, reference IW5101, is 45mm with a power reserve display and an in-house eight day movement. The Automatic Moon Phase 37 shows the moon at 12 o'clock and is one of the most popular models for women.

What to look for

Polished steel and gold cases show every scratch, so ask how much the watch has been polished; the bezel and lugs should still have sharp edges. Many Portofinos come on the Milanese mesh bracelet, which can stretch or snag, so check that the clasp closes cleanly. Alligator straps made with Santoni are common and wear over time. On diamond-set models, confirm the setting is from IWC, because aftermarket bezels appear on this model; custom pieces on our site are marked as custom. Wind the Eight Days and check that the power reserve hand moves. Match the serial number to the papers.

Questions

IWC Portofino questions

Portofino or Portugieser: what is the difference?

Both are IWC dress watches, but the Portofino is simpler and softer in design, with a slim bezel, Roman numerals or batons and usually a date. The Portugieser has a larger dial with Arabic numerals and a railway minute track, inspired by marine chronometers. The Portofino is usually priced lower and wears smaller, which makes it an easy everyday dress watch.

Is the Portofino a good watch for women?

Yes. The 34mm and 37mm models were designed with smaller wrists in mind and come in steel or red gold, often with diamond bezels, mother of pearl dials and moon phases. Most use automatic movements, so they wind as you wear them. Many women also choose the 40mm Automatic for a slightly bolder look that still sits flat under a sleeve.

Which Portofino movement is best?

It depends on what you value. The 40mm Automatic uses a reliable calibre with around 42 hours of power reserve. The Chronograph uses a proven 7750-based calibre with day and date. The Hand-Wound Eight Days uses IWC's in-house movement and runs for about eight days on a full wind, shown on the power reserve display. For daily simplicity, the Automatic is the easiest to own.

Bracelet or strap on a Portofino?

The Milanese mesh bracelet gives the Portofino a vintage, dressy look and adjusts to many wrist sizes, though it can catch hairs and needs care to avoid stretching. Alligator straps are lighter and more formal. Steel models wear well on either, while gold models usually come on straps. If you buy one on a strap, you can add a mesh bracelet later from IWC.
