A Tudor revival

Tudor, the brand Hans Wilsdorf created alongside Rolex, launched the Black Bay in 2012. It drew on Tudor's dive watches of the 1950s, especially the big crown Submariner models, and brought back the snowflake hands Tudor first used in the late 1960s. The first Black Bay had a burgundy bezel, a domed dial and gilt details. It helped rebuild Tudor's reputation, and the line now spans many sizes and functions.

Sizes and versions

The Black Bay 41 is the core model. The Black Bay 58, at 39mm, draws on Tudor's 1958 diver with a slimmer case and gilt touches. The Black Bay 54, at 37mm, is the smallest, with a 60-minute bezel and no crown guards. The Black Bay GMT adds a 24-hour bezel and a fourth hand, and the Black Bay Chrono has a tachymeter bezel. Bronze, silver 925 and gold versions add warmth, and bronze develops its own patina over time.

References to know

The 79220R was the first Black Bay, with an ETA-based movement. In 2016 Tudor moved to its in-house MT5602 with the 79230R, 79230B and 79230N in burgundy, blue and black. The Black Bay 58 79030N arrived in 2018 with the MT5402, followed by the blue 79030B. The Black Bay GMT 79830RB uses the MT5652 and a red and blue bezel. The Black Bay Chrono 79360N uses the MT5813, based on a Breitling movement. The Black Bay 54, ref. 79000N, uses the MT5400. The 2023 update of the Black Bay 41 moved to a Master Chronometer version of the MT5602.

Buying advice

Know the movement generation: early ETA-based models cost less, while in-house models offer a longer power reserve. Check the bezel for smooth action and alignment, and the gilt or white dial print for damage. Bronze models should show natural patina, not polishing marks. Check bracelets with rivet-style links for stretch. Ask about box, papers and service history, which matter for resale on discontinued references.

Questions

Tudor Black Bay questions

Black Bay 41, 58 or 54: which size?

The 41 has the most presence on the wrist. The 58, at 39mm, is slimmer and suits most wrists, which has made it one of Tudor's most popular models. The 54, at 37mm, is vintage in scale and suits smaller wrists or anyone who likes a compact diver. The design language is shared across all three, so choose on fit and how you wear a watch.

How does Tudor relate to Rolex?

Tudor was established by Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex, to offer dependable watches at a lower price. Both brands are owned by the foundation he set up, but today they design and produce separately, and Tudor makes its own in-house movements. The Black Bay shares a design history with early Submariners, but it is its own watch.

How does the Black Bay GMT compare with the Rolex GMT-Master II?

Both show a second time zone with a 24-hour hand and can have a red and blue bezel. The Black Bay GMT is a 41mm Tudor with the MT5652 and an aluminum bezel insert, while the GMT-Master II is a 40mm Rolex with a ceramic bezel and higher finishing. The Tudor costs far less and is easier to buy, which makes it a sensible everyday travel watch.

Are the in-house Tudor movements better than the early ETA ones?

The in-house calibres offer around 70 hours of power reserve, against about 38 hours on the early ETA-based models, and they are COSC chronometers. ETA-based Black Bays are simpler and often cheaper to service. For daily wear, many buyers prefer the in-house models, while some collectors seek out the first 79220R for its place in Tudor's history.
