A round Cartier, 2007

Cartier launched the Ballon Bleu in 2007, and it quickly became one of the brand's best sellers. Its rounded case swells at the edge like a balloon, and an arc of metal on the right side wraps around the crown, protecting a blue cabochon. The guilloche dial, Roman numerals and blued steel sword hands follow long Cartier tradition, but the convex case was new and gave the house a modern round watch to sit beside the Tank and the Santos.

Sizes and references

The Ballon Bleu has been made in many sizes: 28mm and 33mm, usually quartz, and 36mm, 40mm and 42mm, usually automatic. The W69012Z4 is the best known reference, the 42mm steel automatic on a steel bracelet. Newer references begin with WSBB for steel models and WGBB for gold, and recent automatics use Cartier's in-house calibre 1847 MC, while older ones use calibres such as the 049, based on a Swiss base movement. Cases come in steel, 18k yellow, rose and white gold, and two-tone steel and gold. Many models have diamond bezels or diamond dials set by Cartier.

What to look for

Check the blue cabochon on the crown for chips. On steel models it is a synthetic spinel, and on gold models a sapphire. Look at the crown guard and the domed case edge for dents, since the shape catches knocks. Bracelet links use small screws; ask for any removed links. Check the dial under a loupe for scratches or refinishing on the guilloche pattern. Diamond bezels are often added to this model after the fact, and any custom piece on our site is marked as custom. Match the serial number on the caseback to the papers and ask about the last service.

Questions

Cartier Ballon Bleu questions

Which Ballon Bleu size should I choose?

The 42mm is the classic men's size and wears large because of the rounded case. The 40mm is a slightly smaller modern option. The 36mm suits medium wrists and is a popular unisex choice. The 33mm and 28mm are elegant on smaller wrists and pair well with bracelets. The domed case makes the Ballon Bleu look larger than its diameter, so try sizes in person.

Is the Ballon Bleu a good daily watch?

Yes. The steel models are sturdy, easy to read and suit both business and casual clothes. Water resistance is around 30 meters on most models, so it handles rain and hand washing but should not be worn swimming. The polished steel bracelet is comfortable but shows fine scratches over time, and a leather strap is a dressier alternative.

Quartz or automatic Ballon Bleu?

The smaller 28mm and 33mm models are often quartz, which makes them accurate, thin and low maintenance. The 36mm, 40mm and 42mm models are usually automatic, with a mechanical movement that winds as you wear it. Automatic movements need service every several years, while quartz models mainly need battery changes. Choose by size first, then movement.

How is the Ballon Bleu different from the Tank or the Santos?

The Tank is rectangular and dressy, the Santos is square with exposed screws and a sporty bracelet, and the Ballon Bleu is round with a convex case and a protected cabochon crown. It is the softest and most rounded of the three. Many buyers choose the Ballon Bleu as their first Cartier because it works with almost any outfit.
