A diver since 1957
Breitling introduced the Superocean in 1957 as a professional dive watch, built for the first wave of recreational and military divers. Early versions included a three-hand model and a chronograph. In the 1960s the Slow Motion model used a dial built around elapsed minutes, a style that inspired the 2022 Superocean. In 2007, for the 50th anniversary, Breitling launched the Superocean Heritage, a dressier diver with a mesh bracelet and a cleaner dial.
Superocean sizes and models
The 2022 Superocean Automatic comes in 36mm, 42mm, 44mm and 46mm, with the Breitling calibre 17, a ceramic bezel insert and 300 meters of water resistance. It is offered in bright dial colors such as yellow, orange and blue, as well as black. The earlier Superocean II and Superocean 44 Special were heavier tool watches with deeper ratings on some versions, and Superocean chronographs add timing.
The Superocean Heritage
The Heritage is the more classic option. The Superocean Heritage II, reference AB2010 in 42mm and AB2020 in 46mm, uses the calibre B20, developed with Tudor and offering about 70 hours of power reserve. The Heritage '57, launched in 2020, recreates the look of the original 1957 model, including bronze and gold versions. Heritage models come on a steel mesh bracelet, a rubber strap or leather. The case is slimmer and more polished than the Superocean, so it sits well under a shirt cuff.
What to look for
Turn the bezel: it should click firmly in one direction only, and the ceramic insert should have no chips. Check the dial for moisture marks or fogging, which point to a failed seal. Mesh bracelets can stretch and snag, so make sure the clasp locks. Ask when the gaskets were last replaced, since a diver should be pressure tested after every service. Match the serial number to the papers.

Questions
Breitling Superocean questions
Superocean or Superocean Heritage: which is right for me?
The Superocean is the sport diver: colorful dials, a bold ceramic bezel and 300 meters of water resistance on current models. The Superocean Heritage is the dressier choice, with a polished case, mesh bracelet and a cleaner dial that works with a suit. Both can swim. Pick the Superocean for vacations and water sports and the Heritage if you want one watch for everything.
What is the B20 calibre in the Heritage?
The B20 is a self-winding movement Breitling developed with Tudor, based on Tudor's own manufacture calibre. It offers about 70 hours of power reserve and is a COSC chronometer. It replaced the calibres based on outside base movements used in the first Heritage models. If you want the newer movement, look for Heritage II references and check the papers for the calibre.
Is the Superocean a real dive watch?
Yes. Current Superocean Automatic models are rated to 300 meters, with a unidirectional bezel, screw-down crown and strong lume. They are built for diving, snorkeling and swimming. As with any diver, have the water resistance tested after a service or whenever the watch has been opened, and rinse it in fresh water after the ocean or the pool.
Which Superocean size should I choose?
The 42mm suits most wrists and is the most versatile. The 44mm and 46mm deliver the bold tool watch look and wear large. The 36mm works well for smaller wrists and for women. In the Heritage line, the 42mm is the usual choice and the 46mm is for larger wrists. The mesh bracelet makes the Heritage feel lighter on the wrist than it looks.
