A flight computer on the wrist

Breitling was founded in 1884 by Leon Breitling in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, and moved into aviation early. In 1952 it introduced the Navitimer, a chronograph with a circular slide rule bezel that lets a pilot work out speed, fuel consumption, climb rates and distance. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association adopted it as its official watch, and the AOPA wings logo appeared on the dial. In 1962 Scott Carpenter wore a 24-hour version in orbit, later sold as the Cosmonaute.

Sizes and key references

The 2022 redesign is the current core: the Navitimer B01 Chronograph in 41mm, 43mm and 46mm, references AB0139, AB0138 and AB0137, with the in-house calibre B01 and about 70 hours of power reserve. These watches brought the AOPA wings back to the dial and refined the bezel and case. The previous generation, the Navitimer 01, reference AB0121 in 43mm, used the same calibre with a different dial. Breitling also makes three-hand Navitimer Automatic models and GMT versions without the chronograph.

Older references and movements

Navitimers from before the B01 era use calibres based on outside base movements, most often the Valjoux 7750 family, under names such as Breitling 13 and Breitling 23. The Old Navitimer, reference A13322, is a common example. These are proven movements and usually cost less to service than an in-house calibre. Vintage pieces from the 1950s and 1960s used the hand wound Venus 178 chronograph.

What to look for

The slide rule bezel should turn smoothly in both directions with a clean feel, and its scale should line up with the scale on the dial. Look for fading or scratches on the printed numbers, which are hard to restore. Run the chronograph through start, stop and reset. Check the bracelet for stretch and test the deployant clasp. Match the serial number on the case to the papers and ask about service history.

Questions

Breitling Navitimer questions

How do you use the slide rule bezel?

The rotating outer scale and fixed inner scale form a circular slide rule. Line up values on the two scales to multiply, divide and convert units. Pilots used it for ground speed, fuel burn, rate of climb and distance. Today most owners use it for simple math, such as converting miles to kilometers or working out average speed on a drive. It takes a few minutes to learn.

Which Navitimer size should I choose?

The 43mm B01 Chronograph is the traditional Navitimer size and fits most wrists. The 41mm is a good choice for smaller wrists or a dressier look, and the 46mm is for buyers who want the biggest dial and bezel. The Navitimer dial is busy, so a larger case makes the scales easier to read. Lug length matters too, so try sizes on in person.

What is the difference between the Navitimer and the Cosmonaute?

The Cosmonaute uses a 24-hour dial, so the hour hand goes around once a day instead of twice. Breitling made it for astronaut Scott Carpenter, who wore it on the Aurora 7 mission in 1962, because day and night are hard to tell apart in orbit. Otherwise it keeps the slide rule bezel and chronograph. It reads differently and takes a little practice.

Is the B01 worth paying more for?

The B01 is Breitling's in-house column wheel chronograph with a vertical clutch and about 70 hours of power reserve. It has a reputation for reliability and a smooth pusher feel. Earlier Navitimers with 7750-based calibres are also dependable and often cost less to buy and service. Choose a B01 model for the latest design and movement, or an older reference if value matters more.
